Fantastic skin review today for my daughter who has been suffering with acne. She came away feeling listened to. MJ was able to demonstrate her amazing knowledge of how the skin works at a level she understood. Looking forward to starting the treatment plan. Thank you!

how to get rid of acne
Sometimes acne can be treated with over-the-counter topical skincare products alone. However, for more severe forms of acne, more intense treatment is usually necessary. If your acne hasn’t started to clear up within a few weeks of OTC treatment, it’s time to book an acne consultation.
At Smileworks, we are proud to offer a wide range of acne treatments. Which you get is entirely dependent on the severity of your acne. We recommend booking a consultation with one of our incredible skincare specialists, and they can help you choose the most effective treatment for your specific acne.
prescription skincare
For mild to moderate acne, prescription skincare may be the only treatment you’ll need to clear it up. Topical creams and retinoids can make a dramatic difference in your skin’s appearance, and you can start to see a change in your skin within just a few weeks. Prescription skincare products can only be prescribed by our aesthetic practitioners, so it’s best to book your consultation with them if you suspect this is the right treatment option for you.
chemical peels
Chemical skin peels are another great treatment option for mild to moderate acne. At Smileworks, we have four different chemical peels to choose from, each with different levels of skin penetration. All of our peels are suitable for acne treatment, and which peel you get will depend on the severity of your acne. Starting at £60.
profacial
The best facial on the market, ProFacial deeply cleanses the skin and clears your pores, making it an excellent choice for acne treatment. This treatment is best for those with mild forms of acne like whiteheads and blackheads. Not only will the ProFacial clear your skin, but it also provides unbeatable exfoliation. Your skin will look healthier and more renewed than ever before. Starting at £72.
laser treatment
Laser treatment is another option for patients struggling with breakouts. Here at Smileworks, we use the Aerolase Neo laser to treat acne. The Neo is a non-ablative laser that is proven to clear your acne by reducing sebum production and inflammation. This laser is completely painless, and there is no downtime.
Once your acne has cleared up, we recommend using the ablative Aerolase Era laser to remove any acne scarring that is left behind. Starting at £250.

Don’t touch or pick at acne-prone areas of your skin
Eat a balanced diet and drink more water
Reduce friction or pressure on the skin (e.g. tight-fitting hats and clothing)
Shower or wash your face after exercise or sweating
Take steps to reduce your stress levels
Keep your face clean and maintain a skincare routine with products compatible with your skin type (e.g. avoid oil-based products if you have oily skin)

FAQ
Can acne be removed in a week?
Any product or treatment claiming to clear your acne overnight, in a day, or in a week is likely a scam. It is almost impossible to completely clear up an acne breakout in such a short period of time. It can take weeks to see results from treatment and months to completely get rid of your acne. When treating acne, you should be patient and expect treatment to take time. Results won’t happen overnight, but when they finally do, it will be well worth it.
How do I tell if acne is bacterial or hormonal?
If you notice your acne tends to flare up at specific points during your menstrual cycle, specifically around your chin and jawline, there is a good chance you have hormonal acne.
Bacterial acne will appear in the more oily areas of your face such as your forehead and nose, and it seemingly appears at random times. The best way to know whether your acne is bacterial or hormonal is to book a consultation with one of our skincare specialists.
Does vaping cause acne?
Yes, vaping can cause or worsen acne. This is due to the chemicals in vapes. When these chemicals come into contact with your skin, they can dehydrate the outer layers. To compensate for this, your skin overproduces sebum which can result in acne. If you suspect vaping is causing your acne breakouts, it’s best to quit. If this isn’t possible, make sure to stay hydrated and keep your skin cleansed and moisturised.
Does sugar cause acne?
Yes, an excess in sugar has been shown to cause and worsen acne. This can be combated by eating a more balanced diet. There is no need to cut out sugar altogether, but limiting your sugar intake could help your acne clear up.
Do sunbeds help acne?
While sunbeds may appear to clear up your skin by drying it out, this is only temporary. Similar to vaping, when an external force rapidly dries out your skin, your body responds by overproducing oil. This oil then causes your acne to return, often worse than it was before.
Sunbeds are also incredibly harmful to your skin and can cause hyperpigmentation and even cancer. For your health, sunbeds should always be avoided.
Does toothpaste help acne?
Contrary to popular belief, toothpaste does not help clear acne. It will only irritate your acne and make it more inflamed and noticeable. We recommend using a product that is advertised to clear acne or getting treatment from a skincare professional.
Is acne itchy?
Most acne should not feel itchy. While it is possible for cystic or nodular acne to feel itchy, any other type of acne should not be itchy, and this is likely a sign of another skin condition like fungal acne (folliculitis) or rosacea.
Is acne contagious?
No, acne is not contagious. There are many skin conditions that are contagious, but fortunately acne is not one of them.
When does acne go away?
Most acne will clear on its own shortly after puberty. Teenage acne can stick around until your early to mid 20s. However, if you find yourself still struggling with acne into adulthood, it might be time to seek other treatment options.
How long does it take to see results?
With most acne treatments, you will start to see results within 4-8 weeks, and your acne should completely fade within a few months.
Are results from treatment permanent?
There is no permanent cure for acne. Results from your treatment can be permanent if you maintain a consistent skincare routine and healthy diet. If you don’t do these things, there is a chance your acne will come back.
How do I get rid of acne scars?
Acne scar treatment can look different than acne treatment. Since acne is considered an open wound, more intense treatments like ablative lasers cannot be used on active acne. Once your acne is cleared, you can then start treatment for your acne scars and marks. More information can be found on our acne scar treatment page.
